Certifications

CERTIFICATION OF ITALIAN AS A SECOND LANGUAGE

The Certification of Italian as a Second Language (CILS) exam evaluates one’s level of knowledge of Italian as a second language.

Exams are for all international students, Italian citizens residing abroad (descendants of Italian emigrants) and foreign immigrants to Italy.

No particular academic title is required to take the exam.

PLEASE NOTE: all information regarding the CILS exams on the website of Universita’ di Siena is provided in Italian only.

The Istituto Italiano di Cultura Toronto is authorized to give these exams through an agreement that the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has entered into with the Università per Stranieri di Siena CILS.

  • Please note that it is not the Istituto Italiano di Cultura that assigns official language certification. The Istituto is only an authorized examination centre that administers the exam on behalf of the University for Foreigners of Siena CILS (Certification Italian as a Foreign Language).
  • The exams are held as per the schedule established by the University for Foreigners of Siena, who is also responsible for the preparation and correction of the exams.
  • The registration fee for the “Certification of Italian as a Second Language” exam is $135 for the B1 Citizenhip exam and $350 for other exams and is payable upon registration.

IMPORTANT: Applicants are required to check the official University of Siena CILS site often to stay abreast of updates on changes in schedules and test administration, which are at the sole discretion of the University of Siena.
