Majesty. Illusion between Italy and Canada originated during a series of conversations with curators Francesca Molteni and Maria Cristina Didero. The Istituto Italiano di Cultura Toronto was eager to present new young protagonists of the most innovative and remarkable Italian design by exploring one of the real and symbolic territories that define Canadian culture and identity: the relationship of humans with wild nature. In this area, designers Chiara Andreatti and Francesco Faccin were able to listen, interpret and represent the tension between the two extremes made up of the artifact and the natural. Ultimately, the exhibition is the result of this dialogue and this exploration, effectively summarized in the video collection and catalogue that accompany it.

The exhibition was to open at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Toronto in May, 2020 and welcome visitors with an immersive installation in the gallery of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura. Things, as we know, have gone differently. Nature, invoked, has imposed an unexpected direction on events and even our small exhibition project has been suspended during this rarefied time of social distancing.

FRANCESCO FACCIN
Constantly shifting the area of application between industrial production, independent production, community design and gallery work, Francesco Faccin, believes in design without boundaries or limits: “I am interested in design that sparks connections, thought and debate, above all, those that are a product of in-depth studies beyond the object itself. Design is a fantastic opportunity to deepen our relationship with the world around us”.

Francesco was born in Milan. In 2004, after a collaboration lasting almost 2 years with Enzo Mari, he began to work with the lute-maker Francesco Rivolta. In 2007, he started his own studio in Milan. From 2009 to 2015, he was a consultant for Michele De Lucchi. Currently, he heads a course in product design at the Free University of Bolzano, as well as teaching in many other Italian and foreign universities and was Italian Fellow at the prestigious American Academy in Rome in 2013. Studio Francesco Faccin collaborates on a regular basis with Italian and international clients, including design galleries (Rossana Orlandi,Nilufar), private companies, public institutions and NGOs.
