20th Edition Week of the Italian Language in the World: ROMICS DIGITAL EXHIBITION – Illustrated Stories. The evolution of languages in comics

The international festival of comics, animation, cinema and games, ROMICS, in collaboration with the Cultural Institutes of Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Toronto and Washington DC, inaugurates the digital exhibition Illustrated Stories. The evolution of languages in comics on October 19, 2020. The event takes place on the occasion of the 20th edition of the Week of the Italian Language in the World (October 19-25, 2020), promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. The theme of this year’s edition is Italian Between Word and Image: graffiti, illustrations, comics.

The aim is to focus on the evolution of the language of comics: from the great masters to emerging authors, it is a virtual journey to discover the profound changes, particularly in narrative terms, that this art is experiencing in recent years, beginning with the figure of the screenwriter. The exhibition is centered on the works of Tito Faraci; writer, screenwriter for Disney, Astorina, Sergio Bonelli Editore and editorial curator of Feltrinelli Comics. It will also explore the interactions with multiple designers and characters and will see 30 works on display by the authors of the most important Italian publishing houses, among which Giorgio Cavazzano, Silvia Ziche, Bruno Brindisi, Marco Gervasio, Enrique Breccia, Ivo Milazzo, Giuseppe Palumbo, Sio, Francesco Ripoli and Lorenzo Pastrovicchio.

The aim of this proposed cultural study is a reflection on the mutations of narrative rhythms dictated both by the impact of new media and by the increasing popularity of the graphic novel, in addition to offering an international initiative and “country branding” linked to comics.

Romics has created the exhibition itineraries in the form of a virtual experience, allowing the public to enjoy the exhibitions remotely, actively involving fans and operators in the sector through multimedia content and in-depth webinars.

This virtual exhibition is accompanied by a series of meetings centered on the changes to iconic characters of Italian, as well as international, comics and graphic novels. Attention will be given to: the innovative and international impact of Disney Italia; graphic novels; narrative impact; the introduction of new narrative languages and rhythms. There will also be a journey behind the scenes of a comic book that sees Diabolik as the protagonist of a dialogue on how to arrive at that extraordinary alchemy between story and image. Tito Faraci, Alex Bertani, Barbara Baldi, Sergio Brancato, Igort, Mario Gomboli, Giuseppe Palumbo and other authors on the Italian scene will take part in these meetings.

The digital exhibition and live meetings will be available free of charge, in Italian and English, on the www.romics.it site and on the sites of the participating Italian cultural and diplomatic offices, from October 19 to November 15, 2020.
