There is no more moving way to celebrate the season than through traditional folk songs accompanied by instruments typical of the Italian countryside, with a pastorale played on the zampogne, special bagpipes traditionally played by shepherds on Christmas Eve. This year, music from popular folk tradition will mix with sublime polyphony sung by members of the Toronto Chamber Choir, conducted by lutenist Lucas Harris.
From Naples, bagpiper Tommaso Sollazzo returns to join fellow musical artists Francesco Pellegrino and Louis Simao.
The concert will offer Toronto audiences the opportunity to experience this special cultural heritage here in Canada.
Presented by Vesuvius Ensemble, with the support of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Toronto.
ABOUT VESUVIUS ENSEMBLE
Vesuvius Ensemble is dedicated to the musical and cultural heritage from Naples and other parts of southern Italy. The ensemble performs songs in dialect from the Italian countryside which have been passed on orally and in writing over centuries and finally researched and recorded in the twentieth century. The songs are accompanied by Baroque continuo instruments (Baroque guitar, lute) in combination with rustic string, percussion, and wind instruments typical of the region (chitarra battente, colascione, tammorra, ciaramella). The ensemble is led by Francesco Pellegrino and lutenist Lucas Harris with many regular guests like Romina Di Gasbarro, Tommaso Sollazzo, Andrea Casciato, Louis Simão, Ben Grossman. The Ensemble has thrilled audiences in both Canada and Italy, performing on its own, with Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra in the collaborative program Bella Napoli, and with the Toronto Consort in The Soul of Naples. Vesuvius is also pleased to announce a new recording, La meglio gioventù.
