Italian Opera Libretti: Words Weaving Wonder, and Music

Lecture –

The talk will consider the literary specificity of the Italian opera libretto considering historical, political, and literary contexts, to fully comprehend the development of its form. It will address questions such as the literary dignity of the libretti, poetry vs music and the changing role of the librettists through time. Excerpts by Ottavio Rinuccini, Alessandro Striggio, Pietro Metastasio, Lorenzo Da Ponte, Francesco Maria Piave, Arrigo Boito, Nino Rota and Ernesta Rinaldi Rota, and Walter Zidarič will be considered.

Maria Laura Mosco, PhD Italian Studies – Educator in Italian Studies

M. Laura Mosco (Laurea cum Laude, Università La Sapienza, Rome; MA/PhD, University of Toronto) is an Arts and Humanities Teaching Excellence Award winner, and has been teaching Italian culture and language from 2000. Laura has published on Italian contemporary literature, the concept of resistance in Italy, and the Italian cultural discourse and social media.
