For centuries, Jews in Italy lived peacefully in an integrated society. This came to an abrupt end in 1938: the implementation of the Fascist regime’s racial laws designated Jews as “diversi,” or “different” people. Blending archival footage and survivor testimony, director Giorgio Treves traces the rise of Fascism in Mussolini’s Italy, highlighting how mass media and propaganda accelerated racist attitudes and turned Jews into enemies of the state. In an era where alt-right parties are gaining legitimacy in Europe, Treves film is a sobering and timely reminder of how Italy went from being a tolerant society to a Fascist nation.
