Sustainability in Architecture. An Italian Best Practice: The Experience of CasaClima

Tuesday, October 6 | 12:30PM EDT

The Embassy of Italy in Canada, the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Toronto and the Italian Trade Commission in Canada (ICE Agenzia) present the webinar "Sustainability in Architecture. An Italian Best Practice: The Experience of CasaClima".

In a conversation led by Umberto Berardi, Associate Professor in the Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science at Ryerson University in Toronto, the Managing Director of Agenzia CasaClima, Ulrich Santa, will present the research, development and control activities through which the agency supports and favours a sustainable approach as applied in the construction sector.

Agenzia CasaClima is an instrumental agency in the Autonomous Province of Bolzano. The purpose of its founding was to execute mandatory energy certifications of the buildings in Alto Adige and now operates throughout the rest of Italy. Agenzia CasaClima offers vast formative contributions for all players in the construction industry. The agency organizes and promotes multiple initiatives, raising awareness in the energy efficiency, sustainability and construction quality sectors and in climate protection.

After the presentation, with the support of the Toronto office of the Italian Trade Commission (ICE Agenzia), participants will have the opportunity to meet B2B with Italian companies that are leaders in the environmental sustainability sector, as applied in the construction industry.

This event is part of the Sustainable Development Festival 2020 program.

Opening remarks by Italy’s Ambassador to Canada, His Excellency Claudio Taffuri, will precede the event.

Dr. Ulrich Santa became Managing Director of the public Energy Agency Südtirol – ClimateHouse in 2012. The ClimateHouse (also KlimaHaus – CasaClima) standards and protocols represent an internationally renowned concept that connects sustainability and energy efficiency for buildings, enterprises and municipalities with regional development. Before taking this position, Ulrich Santa was, for seven years, head of the ICT (Information and Communication Technology) and ITS (Intelligent Transport Systems and Telematics) Department of an Italian motorway operator. Prior to this, he ran his own software engineering and automation technology business, with a particular focus on building technology, monitoring, measurement and control applications. Dr. Santa graduated with a computer engineering degree from the Technical University of Vienna (Dipl.-Ing.). He received his PhD degree from the BOKU - University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences of Vienna (Dr. nat. tech.), where he also worked as a lecturer for several years (specialization courses in the fields of structural engineering, materials science and laboratory testing, computational mechanics, object oriented programming). In 2005, Dr. Santa was granted the "Klaus Fischer - Innovationspreis für Technik und Umwelt". He has published over 70 scientific papers as well as numerous other articles within the area of sustainability and energy efficiency. He gained experience in several international research projects. From 1999 until 2003, Dr. Santa was technical secretary of the fib (fédération international du béton) task group 5.1 “Monitoring and Safety Evaluation of Existing Concrete Structure”. In 2015, Dr. Santa was nominated coordinator of Action Group 9 of the macro-regional EU Strategy for the Alpine Region (EUSALP), focussing on promoting energy efficiency and the production and use of renewable energy in the Alpine Region.

The Festival was created to raise awareness among growing segments of the population on social, economic and environmental sustainability, going beyond subject-matter experts, in order to foster a cultural shift in individual and collective behaviors, and to stimulate “bottom-up” requests that commit the Country’s leadership to comply with the agreements undertaken in the UN. Furthermore, the Festival wants to give voice to citizens, businesses, national and local administrations, universities and civil society in order to foster dialogue and the sharing of best practices on the issues of the 2030 Agenda.

The Festival is a unique experience at international level that allows to reach millions of people in Italy every year thanks to the participation of hundreds of organizations all over the Country, the active role played by universities and the opening of "sustainable development squares” in a number of major Italian cities. This stimulates an unprecedented reflection on the future of our Country, of Europe and the world. In 2019 the Festival was nominated, among over 2,000 projects, as a finalist for the SDG Action Awards of the UN SDG Action Campaign, for it being an innovative initiative and a unique experience in the world.

Conventions, debates, book presentations, exhibitions, film reviews, guided tours, flashmobs: these are the initiatives of the over 270 members of ASviS and of other civil society organizations that are active in Italy, aiming to raise awareness on the various aspects of sustainable development in line with the spirit of civil society involvement promoted by the United Nations.

In its 2020 edition, the Festival expands its reach beyond Italy: ASviS invites everyone around the world to organize events in the context of the Sustainable Development Festival. All countries are called to contribute to achieving the 2030 Agenda: consult the Guidelines for the organization of events and submit your local event.
