The War in Ukraine has a profound impact on geopolitical and global economic issues, from energy policies to inflation, and international markets. The talk will focus on the repercussions and deep differences of this world crisis in Canada and in Italy. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session, moderated by Corrado Paina, Director of ICCO.

FEDERICO RAMPINI, journalist, writer, public speaker and geopolitical analyst, was born in Genoa (Italy) in 1956.

Since 2009 he has lived in New York, where he is a global columnist for the Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera. Previously he was the US Bureau Chief for the newspaper La Repubblica and a White House correspondent, travelling regularly with three Presidents of the United States (Barack Obama, Donald Trump, Joe Biden) and covering international summits: G7, G20, ASEAN, and NATO.  From 2004 to 2009, he was the China correspondent for La Repubblica. As a special envoy for Asia, he covered India, Japan, Southeast Asia, and Korea.  From 2000 to 2004, he was the West Coast Correspondent and columnist for global economy for La Repubblica in San Francisco; from that observatory, he wrote extensively about the first boom of the digital economy and the “Golden Age” of globalization.  From 1997 to 2000, he was the European editor of La Repubblica.  From 1986 to 1995, he was a correspondent in Paris and deputy director of Il Sole-24 Ore in Milan.

Rampini has published more than twenty essays, many of which have been best-selling books in Italy. Among his latest works: “The Long Winter” (Mondadori 2022); “The Suicide of the West” (Mondadori 2022); “To Stop Beijing – Understanding China to save the West” (Mondadori 2021); “East and West – Mass and Individual” (Einaudi 2020); “The Second Cold War” (Mondadori 2019). Among his essays translated into other languages are the best-sellers “The Chinese Century” (Mondadori 2005), “The Empire of Chindia” (Mondadori 2006), and “The Shadow of Mao” (Mondadori 2008).

He was Visiting Professor at the University of Berkeley, California, and at the Shanghai University of Economics and Finance.

He is a member of the New York-Washington-based Council on Foreign Relations and of the Foreign Policy Association.

He is a Principal Expert in Geopolitics for projects of The European House – Ambrosetti.
