THE INFLUENCE OF ARNOLD SCHÖNBERG’S WORK.
A lecure by Paolo Somigli (The Free University of Bozen-Bolzano)
Arnold Schönberg, creator of a profound renovation of twentieth century music through his “free atonality” and the 12 sound method of composition, received much attention on behalf of Italian cultural and musical circles since the turn of the century. Musical reviews discussed the man and his works; translated excerpts of his writings where quoted in reviews, articles and essays. Such a reception was a result of the ideological and cultural spirit of the time. Following the Italian Liberation, the cultural world’s antifascist adjustment was important in the acceptance of the composer and it actually had the same affect retroactively by a few decades.
Paolo Somigli is a Musicology and Music History researcher, as well as adjunct professor at the Faculty of Education Sciences of the Libera University of Bolzano. He received his PhD in Musicological Discipline (La Sapienza University, Rome, 2003) and has a diploma in piano. His research includes the relationship between tradition and contemporaneity, the Italian reaction to dodecaphony and American Art Music.
