On the occasion of the program The European Union: Capitals & Cultures, presented by The European Union Delegation to Canada and the Diplomatic Missions of EU Member States to celebrate Canada’s sesquicentennial festivities on 11 June, the lecture Rome in Italian Cinema: From La presa di Roma to La grande bellezza by Dr. Franco Gallippi will be presented.
Franco Gallippi provides a brief overview of representations of the city of Rome in Italian cinema, and then focuses on several important films by Italian directors who have given the world a unique portrait of the “eternal city”. From Italy’s beginning as a secular Republic (La presa di Roma 1905) to an endless search of the meaning of this Republic (La grande bellezza 2013), the city of Rome has been and continues to be the film set in which this drama unfolds.
Franco Gallippi ha conseguito il PhD (dottorato di ricerca) con una tesi su Italo Calvino presso l’Università di Toronto nel 2007. Ha insegnato lingua e letteratura italiana alla McMaster University (Hamilton) per quattro anni. Insegna lingua, letteratura e cinema italiano all’Istituto Italiano di Cultura a Toronto e sta preparando il manoscritto per un libro su Italo Calvino. Ha pubblicato diversi saggi su cinema e letteratura italiana nelle seguenti riviste: Quaderni di Italianistica, Rivista di Studi Italiani e Italian Canadiana.
