Ten years before Paul Newman starred in Exodus, this forgotten Italian neo-realist drama on the founding of Israel was one of the first films to tell about the migration of European Jews to Palestine under British mandate. The Earth Cries Out is the story of three comrades who fought together in WW2 and become enemies in the years leading up to the declaration of the State of Israel—a British colonist, a member of the Irgun and a Haganah soldier. “Shot in black and white, with a cast of professional actors and ‘real people’ in Rome and southern Italy, The Earth Cries Out has the convincing, intimately human look, if not the loose structure, of its neo-realist contemporaries.” (Suzanne Ruta, The Forward) Subtitles courtesy of Centro Primo Levi NY.
