Italian Opera Libretti: from Rinuccini’s Dafne to Illica and Giacosa’s La Boheme, Words Weaving Wonder

The talk will consider the literary specificity of the Italian opera libretto considering historical, political, and literary contexts, to fully comprehend the development of its form. It will address questions such as the literary dignity of the libretti, poetry vs music and the changing role of the librettists through time. Excerpts by Ottavio Rinuccini, Alessandro Striggio, Pietro Metastasio, Lorenzo Da Ponte, Francesco Maria Piave, Arrigo Boito, Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa will be considered.

Dr. M. Laura Mosco, an Arts and Humanities Teaching Excellence Award winner, has been teaching Italian culture and language from 2000. Laura’s research interests span from literary representations of Roman urban space in Italian contemporary prose and poetry, to the relation between Italian opera libretti and poetic tradition, the concept of resistance in Italy, and the Italian cultural discourse and social media.
