As part of the program of European Book Club, and In occasion of XIX Settimana della Lingua Italiana nel Mondo
“L’Italiano sul Palcoscenico” Edizione 2019, the Istituto Italiano will host a discussion with Professor Franco Gallippi on the book: Pereira Maintains by Antonio Tabucchi.Milano: Feltrinelli, 1994
October 29 | 6.30pm
Set in the summer of 1938 in Portugal, a country under the fascist shadow of Spain, Pereira Maintains tells a tale of reluctant heroism. Dr. Pereira, an editor at a second-rate Lisbon newspaper, wants nothing to do with European Politics. All this changes as events lead Pereira to ascend to consciousness and a reckless act of rebellion. However, the question of heroism is complex: is it proven through an act of rebellion or the acts of everyday living?
Dr. Franco Gallippi focuses on this theme by exploring the role of journalism and literature conveyed throughout the novel. The evening ends with a clip from the documentary by Diego Perucci, Se di tutto resta un poco: sulle tracce di Antonio Tabucchi (According to Tabucchi, 2018).
He has been awarded many prestigious literary awards and prizes including the Premio Campiello, The Premio Viareggio and the Aristeion Prize for this book.
