Dante’s words meet live music and contemporary reflection in Dante’s Inferno: A Fusion of Text, Music and Thought, a creation by DopoLavoro Teatrale commissioned by the prestigious Stratford Festival in Canada.
At the heart of the performance is the universal journey told in the Divine Comedy: a man who has lost his way, a crossing through Hell, and the search for a possible path through the darkness.
Daniele Bartolini brings Dante’s verses to the stage, while Prof. Donato Santeramo’s narration guides the audience through the work, illuminating its meanings, references, and questions that remain profoundly relevant today. Andrea Gozzi’s live music builds a soundscape around the words, placing the audience “nel mezzo” of a forest of sounds.
Theatre, literature, and music come together in this one-of-a-kind artistic and educational combination – a form that spans the centuries and brings Dante into the present, turning his descent into Hell into a reflection on the anxieties, contradictions, and search for meaning of our own time.
This event is part of the 26th annual edition of the Week of Italian Language in the World. This year’s theme is “Brilliant Language: Conceiving, Designing and Creating with Italian.”
Presented by DopoLavoro Teatrale and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Toronto. Work commissioned by the Stratford Festival.
