The 22nd edition of the Week of the Italian Language in the World is presented under the High Patronage of the President of the Republic of Italy. It is organized yearly by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) in collaboration with the Italian Ministry of Universities and Research (MUR), the Ministry of Culture (MiC), the Accademia della Crusca, the Dante Alighieri Society and the Swiss Confederation, where Italian is one of the official languages.

The Department of Italian Studies at the University of Toronto, in collaboration with St. Michael’s College and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Toronto, will present a series of events to celebrate La Operina (1522), the first manual on humanistic cursive in the year of its 500th anniversary.

A panel of experts in manuscript culture and early printed book, including a delegation of calligraphers from the Scriptorium Foroiuliense in San Daniele (Italy), will officially present this beautiful copy of La Operina, in a show-and-tell panel exploring the historical significance of Cancelleresca handwriting, in light of the rise of typographic cursive – known as Italic – in the early 16th century.

In a three-hour workshop, calligraphers from the Scriptorium Foroiuliense in San Daniele (Italy), who specialized in Medieval historical scripts, will teach the secrets of the centuries-old tradition of Cancelleresca handwriting, the Papal Chancery script, now usually called humanistic cursive or italic. Quill, ink, and paper will be provided. Join us to experience firsthand the painstaking work of an Italian scribe.
