Hearing loss and balance disorders occur in people of all ages. The World Health Organization reports that hearing loss affects 466 million people worldwide and this number is expected to rise to 900 million by 2050.

Inner ear disorders are mainly due to the loss of sensory cells that capture sound and movement. Infections, ototoxic drugs, genetic mutations, noise exposure or ageing cause sensory cell loss. This cell loss is irreversible due to the absence of regeneration and the lack of effective therapy. We will discuss the therapies available and focus on the research seeking a biological solution to inner ear disorders and on therapeutic development to restore function.

Dr. Emilia Luca is a Research Associate at Sunnybrook Research Institute, Toronto, Canada. Dr. Luca holds a Ph.D. from the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart of Rome. Four years ago, she joined Dr. Alain Dabdoub’s Laboratory to conduct research aimed at developing therapies for hearing and balance disorders. Using cutting-edge technologies such as single-cell multi-omics approaches and 3D cell culture models, she investigates molecular mechanisms to regenerate human inner ear sensory cells.
