I AM NOT LEGEND

Over 100,000 panels, obtained from all the frames of Night of the Living Dead (1968) by George Romero, printed in A4 dimensions, using white paint on each sheet so as to erase the presence of the zombies in the original film. The panels, which were digitized and re-edited later, emulate the new screenplay by Andrea Mastrovito, composed of references taken from approximately 100 renowned films, novels, and songs. As is custom for the artist, the imagery references span across the literature of Calvino and Primo Levi, the history of cinema with Apocalypse Now by Coppola and the more recent Joker, through to the music of the Beatles, Muse and R.E.M., to name a few, conveying the many levels that the film renders us, ranging from philosophy to pop culture.

I Am Not Legend is a work, 72 minutes in length, in which Andrea Mastrovito once again uses cinema to investigate the theme of identity and the relationship with the other: after the experience gained with NYsferatuSymphony of a Century (2017), I Am Not Legend is a revisitation that takes place with the erasure of the living dead from all the sequences and with the complete rewriting of the dialogues within the iconic 1968 movie. Introducing a new animation technique, the artist further explores his practice in which imagination and past works change context and are used as metaphor and parable about the loss of identity and historical memory of our time. The soundtrack was entirely created by renowned Irish composer Matthew Nolan with Stephen Shannon, except for the movie’s opening and closing music by Maurizio Guarini, bandmember of Goblin.

In 2019, the film I Am Not Legend, borne out of a project by Mastrovito with the support of the cultural association, Casa Testori, was awarded a prize at the 6th edition of the Italian Council program promoted by the Directorate-General for Contemporary Creativity and Urban Regeneration (DGAAP) of the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism (MiBACT). After its world premiere at Magazzino Italian Art (Cold Spring, NY) in August, the work was exhibited at the Palazzo Fabroni museum in Pistoia, Italy, where it became part of the permanent collection. The inauguration was an occasion to mount the artist’s personal exhibition Io Non Sono Leggenda, which runs until January 10, 2021, supported by all the involved institutions beyond the Association of Italian Contemporary Art Museums (AMACI).
