Acts of Erasure brings the two distinct artistic practices of Fatma Bucak and Krista Belle Stewart into dialogue. This pairing opens space for conversations around political identity concerning land and heritage, methodologies of historical repression and interpretation, and the act and effects of erasure. The exhibition is organized in partnership with Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival.

Organized in partnership with Scotiabank CONTACT Photography Festival. Originally planned for the annual Festival in May, this exhibition was rescheduled due to COVID-19.

SAHA–Supporting Contemporary Art From Turkey provided support for Fatma Bucak.

Bucak’s participation in public programmes is supported by the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Toronto.

Krista Belle Stewart, Fatma Bucak and Gabrielle Moser in Conversation

Join artists Krista Belle Stewart and Fatma Bucak for a conversation with art historian Gabrielle Moser about the exhibition Acts of Erasure, currently on at MOCA through January 3, 2021.

Bringing the two distinct artistic practices of Bucak and Stewart into dialogue, this exhibition opens space for conversations around political identity concerning land and heritage, methodologies of historical repression and interpretation, and the act and effects of erasure.

FATMA BUCAK was born in eastern Turkey and identifies as both Kurdish and Turkish. She has had solo exhibitions at institutions internationally including Artpace, San Antonio, Texas; Castello di Rivoli, Turin and at the ICI, New York. In 2013 she was awarded the 13th Illy Present Future Prize.

KRISTA BELLE STEWART is a member of the Upper Nicola Band of the Syilx (Okanagan) Nation in British Columbia. She has had solo exhibitions at the SFU Galleries, Burnaby; Nanaimo Art Gallery, BC and at the Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver. In 2019 she was the 31st winner of the VIVA Award.

GABRIELLE MOZER is a Toronto-based art historian, writer, and independent curator. She is the author of Projecting Citizenship: Photography and Belonging in the British Empire (Penn State UP, 2019) and writes regularly for Artforum, Canadian Art, and esse magazines. A founding member of EMILIA-AMALIA, she is an Assistant Professor in Aesthetics and Art Education in the Faculty of Education at York University.
