"Black Mirror" night: with Davide Bennato, Isabel Pedersen, and Barry Vacker. Moderator: Luca De Biase, journalist, writer and blogger (Sole24Ore)

Has science-fiction replaced philosophy as the ultimate guide to human existence? Which technologies pose the largest risk? What’s the bigger threat to humanity: A.I. or humanity itself?

With: Davide Bennato, Isabel Pedersen, and Barry Vacker.
Moderator: Luca De Biase, Italian journalist, writer and blogger.

In conjunction with the Media Ethics international conference, the Italian Cultural Institute in Toronto will host the Black Mirror Night, a special event and panel discussion about the cult TV series. Please join media theorists and cultural critics for a lively and engaging discussion of Black Mirror and its sci-fi visions of the near-future. Panelists will discuss their favourites episodes.

 

DAVIDE BENNATO is the editor of Black Mirror. Distopia e antropologia digitale (Black Mirror. Dystopia and digital anthropology, 2018) and his works are at the crossroads of social science, digital media and ethics of technology and big data. Bennato, Ph.D. in Communication Sciences, is an associate professor in the Department of Humanities at the University of Catania and he is a member of the board of professors of the Ph.D. in Complex Systems for Physical, Socio-economic and Life Sciences at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the same university. Some of his most recent papers: The shift from public science communication to public relations. The Vaxxed case (2017), The emerging of the disinformation as a socio- computational process. The Blue Whale case study (2018, in italian).

 

LUCA DI BIASE is a journalist and writer. He is the founder and chief editor of Nòva, the science and technology crossplatform section at Il Sole 24 Ore. He is the president of the scientific committee at MediaCivici Association, which is meant to research and help improve the information ecosystem emerging in the social media. He is author of Homo Pluralis, Economia della felicità, Il mago d'ebiz and In nome del popolo mondiale. He blogs at blog.debiase.com and lucadebiase.nova100.ilsole24ore.com. He edited with Giorgio Meletti "Bidone.com". He contributed to the project and implementation of various initiatives, such as Skillpass, ScienceXpress, I nonni raccontano, EquiLiber, Reporters Online. He teaches Knowledge Management and at Pisa university, journalism at Padova university and Sissa university. The Media Ecology Association awarded Luca with The James W. Carey Award for Outstanding Media Ecology Journalism 2016.

ISABEL PEDERSEN is Canada Research Chair in Digital Life, Media, and Culture and an Associate Professor at Ontario Tech University. She founded Decimal Lab, a digital culture and media lab. She explores embodied computing within global technology shifts including the adoption of Artificial Intelligence and humanoid robots. She is the author of Ready to Wear: A Rhetoric of Wearable Computers and Reality-Shifting Media (2013).

BARRY VACKER is the co-editor of Black Mirror and Critical Media Theory (2019, with Angela Cirucci). Other recent books include the third edition of the textbook anthology Media Environments (2019) and Specter of the Monolith (2017), a critical space philosophy inspired by 2001: A Space Odyssey. Vacker teaches media studies at Temple University (Philadelphia), where he is an associate professor in the Klein College of Media and Communication.
