Franco Gallippi: “Dante, Leonardo, e Galileo: l’arte della scienza”

“Dante, Leonardo, and Galileo: The Art of Science”

The Italian Cultural Institute in Toronto presents a lecture series dedicated to the relationship between art and science in those Italians who have inspired and shaped so many minds over the centuries. The first cycle of lectures examines the encyclopaedic and cosmological vocation of Dante Alighieri, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Galileo Galilei. Professor Franco Gallippi aims to take a casual but insightful look at these great minds, and discuss their need to include the entire breadth of human knowledge in their work.

  • Lecture 1: Dante’s Scientific Approach  (October 26  | 10am -12pm)

In this first lecture, Franco Gallippi examines the motif of the journey in Dante Alighieri. A journey that starts with the Liberal Arts as a necessary step for the development of a mind that aims to achieve freedom of/from thought.

  • Lecture 2: The Art and Science of Leonardo (November 2   | 10am -12pm)

In the second lecture, Franco Gallippi focuses on the interaction between art and science in the works of Leonardo Da Vinci. In Leonardo’s work art and science go hand in hand, but what necessity lies between this interaction, and what can this Renaissance genius teach us today in our search for the best of sustainable worlds?

  • Lecture 3: Galileo’s Book of Nature (November 9 | 10am -12pm)

In the third lecture, Franco Gallippi looks to Galileo’s famous passage about the book of nature being written in the language of mathematics. What are the true implications of this affirmation? We strive to write the book of Nature, but it is necessarily a book to which we repeatedly have to add new things, or rediscover and affirm the “old” things.

Franco Gallippi completed his PhD thesis, Calvino: Reader of Leopardi and Galileo, at the University of Toronto. He was Assistant Professor at McMaster University in Hamilton, where he taught Italian language, literature, and cinema for several years. He is presently teaching at the Italian Cultural Institute in Toronto, and is a public lecturer at Hot Docs and continuing education associations based in Toronto. His publications have appeared as chapters in books, and in academic journals in Italy, Canada, and the United States. His forthcoming book examines the works of Italian writer Italo Calvino
