The Westin Ottawa – 11 Colonel By Dr, Ottawa, ON K1N 9H4

Welcoming address:

Buildings in major world cities date back to a time between the 18th and the 19th century. From an architectural point of view, these buildings share common traits even though they are located far away from each other, and that is because the materials, the technologies and the workforce were able to travel much more easily than in the previous period. That is why conservation problems can be the same in different parts of the world. What changes is the geographical setting, which must be well-known before doing any conservation work, but as far as material and construction techniques are concerned, they share common
features and therefore also share similar problems when it comes to restoration.

In general, we can see how modern architecture is often characterized by new materials and techniques, compared to historical and present construction; it is therefore necessary to use specific methods and techniques, also in consideration of the fact that the number of jobs is still limited and sometimes the peculiarity of these buildings is underestimated when it comes to both construction materials and the adopted architectural and structural techniques and solutions.

The issue of applicable laws for this kind of jobs is particularly interesting because these buildings are in the grey area between buildings that are protected by Heritage Laws and buildings that are not. They therefore represent an interesting case because of the difficulty of deciding on the correct approach.

Along with the buildings entirely erected between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the work done during that period and during all of the 20th century should also be included in this framework. It is work done on historical buildings through structures or reconstructions that need the same degree of attention and skills that were reserved for the materials of that period.
