In 1970s Rome, Penélope Cruz plays Clara, radiant in the role of a Spanish woman struggling to fit in with the traditions of the bourgeois Italian family she’s married into. With a short-tempered husband, she’ll take any opportunity she can get to bring joy into the home for their children.

In between the domestic drama, her oldest child Andrea begins to reflect on his gender identity. Born female, he introduces himself as a boy when he meets a girl in a Romani community behind their building, marginalized by land development in the neighbourhood.

Though their innocent romance burgeons over the course of the lazy summer, tensions rise at home. Through it all, Andrea and Clara forge a special connection; they’re always trying to hold back each other from reaching escape velocity, but secretly they find comfort as the only two people in the family who truly see one another.

In the summer of 1984, Pietro’s family rents a house high up in the mountains for a vacation. There, by a twist of fate, he meets Bruno, the only other child in the village, and the two become fast friends.

Over the next 20 years, the two fade in and out of each other’s lives until a tragedy reunites them as grown men. Pietro begins to realize that Bruno is deeply intertwined with not only his family but also his aspirations. With nothing to do over the summer, Bruno suggests they rebuild a dilapidated Alpine shack that holds special significance to their past, and the two only become further entangled in each other’s lives. With Pietro born a city boy and Bruno having spent his life working in the mountains, the two contend with one another, all the while helping each other through the turbulences of life.
