villa charities theatre project

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the passing of renowned Italian writer Dino Buzzati.  To commemorate the anniversary,  Villa Charities and the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Toronto, in partnership with Ponte tra le Culture Society, present Storie, strane storie; a project aimed at bringing people together through theatre.

This 5-week theatre intensive program invites individuals of any age, nationality and experience level to come together and connect through the Italian language and dramatic theatre for a unique social experience featuring ‘strange’ spaces and ‘strange’ stories.

Buzzati’s work will be read, analyzed, interpreted and transformed through hands-on group activities such as games, vocal experiments and creative exercises. Participants will create, rehearse and execute an experimental theatrical performance for a live audience.

Italian theatre actor and director, Gianluca Barbadori, will lead the course and direct the final theatre performance.

Planned activities include:

  • The discovery of collective space
  • Games and group dynamics
  • Vocality
  • Attention games
  • Perception games
  • Trust games
  • Creative exercises and games
  • Text analysis
  • Text interpretation
  • Text on the stage
  • Rehearsals for the performance

Italian theatre actor and director Gianluca Barbadori will lead the intensive theatre course and direct the final theatre performance. Mr. Barbadori’s career in theatre has started as an actor in 1988 in Italy, where he trained with some of the most important artists on the European theatre scene. In 1992 he worked with Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards in their Workcenter in Pontedera, where he deepened his knowledge of the actor’s tools, such as physical memories, theatre actions, and forms of theatrical psychophysical training. Since then, he has not only performed in theatres across Italy and Europe but also explored theatre performance as a director, directing over 130 plays in 32 Countries and 5 continents in many different languages. Mr. Barbadori has also been teaching acting since 1996, gaining several permanent and guest teaching positions in Colombia, Italy, Turkey, Serbia and the UK. His passion is to bring together theatre performances and social projects, working with youth, marginal communities and civilians alongside professional actors and artists.

The final performance will allow the actors to share with the audience everything they have learned in the 5-week course, both individually and as a group.

The performance, held in the evening, will take the audience through the many halls of the Columbus Centre, guided by the actors in a string of “strange” and suggestive spaces. The stories told will be “strange”, just like the characters the audience will meet in this unique theatrical experience.
