ABOUT THE IMAGE

The project stems from the need to articulate the complexity of what we call “landscape”. The need to abolish the dichotomy between man and nature is fundamental since the risk of this thought is to consider nature as a passive element and therefore subordinate to the will and action of man. During a residency in the former ENI Village in Borca di Cadore, the artist developed research on the territory, as the “result of long-lasting co-evolutionary processes between human settlement and the environment”. The former ENI Village offers an exemplary case where it is impossible to establish the boundary between urban design and natural dynamics. Imitating this process an installation was created inside the debris cone adjacent to the Village. It consisted of a line of pulverized acacia leaves, spread out along a gravel ridge within the stony ground. An ambiguous image was produced by the meeting of two instances of natural dynamics design: the artistic intervention and the maintenance of the debris cone by the civil defense. The goal was to break down the concept of humanity that is superior to and opposed to nature, highlight the relational character of the context in which we live and underline the limits – and the inevitable failure – of implementing an ecological change limited to the environmental level. The photographic image summarizes the complexity of the project and is the only proof of the installation, which disappeared within a few hours.

ABOUT CANTICA21

Cantica21 is an initiative launched jointly by MAECI, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and MiBACT, the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism (currently MiC, the Italian Ministry of Culture), that promotes and enhances Italian contemporary art, supporting the production of works by emerging or established artists, and exhibiting them in Italian Cultural Institutes, Embassies and Consulates.

The goal of the project is to convey an authentic image of the country, building a new and stronger narrative of Italy abroad, through themes and values linked to contemporaneity. This initiative also arises in the aftermath of the health emergency caused by the COVID-19 epidemic, as a support measure for visual artists. The selected works will be exhibited in a vast, widespread art exhibition that will take place in Italian Cultural Institutes, Embassies and Consulates around the world.

The aim is to also create a reserve of works intended to increase the Italian public collections of contemporary art. These works, after international circulation, may eventually become part of the Italian Contemporary Art Collection of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (The Farnesina Collection).
