Female creators from across Europe will share their thoughts and experience in making comics in their respective countries. What have been the challenges in their work, has anything changed in recent years and what are their hopes for the future? They will also share how everyday life inspires many of their professional projects and how the comics medium helps them convey these stories.
These and other topics will be discussed with Ingrid Chabbert (France), Kaisa Leka (Finland), Johanna Maierski (Germany), Judith Vanistendael (Belgium) and Luciana Cimino (Italy).
The event will be moderated by Dr. Lucia Cedeira Serantes (Assistant Professor, The University of Western Ontario).
ITALY | Luciana Cimino
Luciana Cimino is a professional journalist. She worked for 10 years at the historical Italian newspaper L’Unità, where she wrote about politics and news about social issues, poverty, immigrants, and school policies. Since 2015, she’s been part of the press staff of the journalism festival, Festival di Giornalismo Internazionale.
MODERATOR | Dr. Lucia Cedeira Serantes
Lucia Cedeira Serantes Lic, MLIS, Ph.D. works as an Assistant Professor (LDI) at the Faculty of Information and Media Studies, at the University of Western Ontario (Canada). Her research focus resides at the intersection of teenagers/young adults, reading practices, and public libraries, with an emphasis on reading practices related to comics. She carried out her thesis work at The University of Western Ontario, exploring the reading experiences of young adult readers of comics, privileging their voices, and examining the interplay between identity, culture, and social structures to expose the complexity of a historically denigrated reading experience. This project was awarded the John A. Lent Scholarship in Comics Studies (International Comics Arts Forum) and in 2019 she published the book Young People, Comics, and Reading: Exploring a Complex Reading Experience with Oxford University Press, based on her thesis work. She has previously presented at the Toronto Comics Arts Festival and New York Comic-Con. Recently she co-authored a chapter about International Comics in The Library’s Guide to Graphic Novels (2020).
Presented in partnership with the EU National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) Ottawa & Toronto and the Embassy of France in Canada.
