IL TRENO DEI BAMBINI

Amerigo Speranza is the narrator of an extraordinary, difficult story in a novel that tells the little-known story of thousands of children from southern Italy who, thanks to the Communist Party, were rescued from misery and entrusted to families in northern and central Italy.

Amerigo is poor, he lives in Naples with his mother Antonietta, an only child without a father who may have disappeared in America, “to work hard”. His mother decides to offer him the opportunity for a better life, she no longer wants to send him to collect the “rags”; for him, she wants schooling, food, health.

The child leaves for the North frightened by the rumours about the wickedness and cruelty of the Communists; he boards the train to treavel to an unknown place where he will find, they assured, a loving family and a welcoming home.
