"So Long, Toronto" Concert Series: Luca Dell'Anna | PIANO

The Istituto Italiano di Cultura Toronto presents a series of musical presentations by Luca Dell’Anna (piano), Mirko Signorile (piano), Claudio Jr. De Rosa (sax) and Redi Hasa (cello), four talented musicians who left an impression on Toronto and Toronto on them.

Due to the restrictions in place, future plans for a return performance in Toronto had to be cancelled. Their time in Toronto was incredibly special, and so, they have each agreed to present an live, online concert, as an homage and a thank you to our city.

Born in Ferrara, Italy, Luca Dell'Anna studied classical and jazz piano in Ferrara and then Rome with Bruno Cesselli, Andrea Beneventano, Enrico Pieranunzi, Stefano Sabatini, Stefano Bollani, first experience as a professional live musician when he was 19, he lives in Milano, Italy since 1999. He collaborates with many musicians in jazz projects. The latest one is Martino Vercesi’s “Virgo Supercluster” featuring Sandro Cerino on reeds and Tony Arco on drums. Amongst his collaborations are remarkable those with Adam Rapa, Ares Tavolazzi, Walter Calloni, Mauro Negri, Israel Varela, Zane Wayne Massey, Fabio Concato, Chris Bennett, Giorgio di Tullio & the Four Cells Quintet, the Black Beat Movement, Triad Vibration, the Cuban Trumpet Player Gendrickson Mena, Marco Mariani’s sextet, with which he records the album “Jazz & Movies 2” and participates to many jazz festivals including italian “MI-TO”, then again: the project “Rootless” with Francesco Bigoni and Danilo Gallo, founder of “El Gallo Rojo” Collective. With Adam Rapa he has many active collaborations such as Elisabeth Vik’s album “Beginnings”, with Ivo Barbieri, Alfredo Paixao and Israel Varela, dedicated to Edvard Grieg’s music and Norwegian popular music. He has recorded many albums, such as “Tan T’Ien – the fourth Door” with Francesco Cusa and Ivo Barbieri awarded amongst the first 3 best jazz albums for the year 2013 by the Japanese “The Jazz Critique” Magazine. Also, with Francesco Cusa, he was in his trio “The Assassins”, participating with them at the “Acacia Jazz Festival” in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. With Adam Rapa and Elisabeth Vik, he was in Japan playing in his Musical Show “Evolution” in Nagoya’s Century Hall, recording a big success and sold-out every re-run. He was in the orchestra with a cast of artists including musicians from the show “Blast” and award-winning acrobats from Le Cirque Du Soleil. He’s also co-founder of the project “Zancle” with Serena Ferrara and Ivo Barbieri dedicated to the mix between jazz and Mediterranean sounds. He collaborates with African Collective “Couleurs Du Monde” and “The Singer Project” with the Cameroon percussionist and singer Daniel Kollé. Again, with Israel Varela he recorded the album “Mana” in 2013, containing his compositions, a tribute to his passion for south-American and in particular Cuban music. Following the wave of popularity gained in Japan by “Tan T’Ien”, “Mana” and “Symbiont” are now very popular on the Japanese market: The song “Abre Los Ojos” from his album “Mana” has been included in the compilation “Jazz Bar 2014” and the song “Struggle Through Lucubration” has been included in the compilation “For Jazz Audio Fans Only vol.7” both selected by the Japanese critic Yasukuni Terashima, one of the most appreciated Japanese Jazz Critics. He has been invited as a guest in the international conference “Nauji vejai“ (“Winds bring Changes”) in Palanga, Lithuania, in duo with Adam Rapa for the closing concert. He has been invited at the “Suisse Diagonales Jazz Festival” in Lugano, Switzerland, with his trio. He is featured in the last edition of italian “Jazz Who’s Who”: “Dizionario del Jazz Italiano” by Flavio Caprera (Feltrinelli, 2014). In May 2015, he publishes his CD “Symbiont” with Danilo Gallo and Michele Salgarello. http://www.lucadellanna.net He is member of Walter Calloni’s Funk Trio playing Hammond Organ with Luca Pasqua on guitar and Alessandro Carreri’s “AC Remake Quartet” with Mauro Negri on Sax and Clarinet and Maxx Furian on drums. With Serena Ferrara he tours in China with the project “Zancle”, performing in jazz festivals in Shenzhen, Shunde, Guangzhou, and at Golden Jazz Club in Zuhai. He has been invited at Minsk Jazz Festival, Belarus, with the sax player Zane Wayne Massey from USA and Vadim Mikhailov, Sergey Korotkov from St. Petersburg. The italian Magazine “Jazzit” has published full-page articles with review of “Symbiont” and “Mana”. Like Tan T’Ien, Symbiont has been awarded amongst the best jazz albums in 2015 by the Japanese Magazine “The Jazz Critique Magazine”. Recently is also been invited in Ukraine at Odessa Jazz festival 2016 and in 2017 in Slovakia with the Sessionmen Filip Kluknavský, Martin Lechman, Brano Valanský and in Serbia in Kragujevac Jazz Festival 2017 with his new quartet featuring Massimiliano Milesi on sax, Danilo Gallo on Bass and Alessandro Rossi on drums.
