Claudio Jr. De Rosa Quintet at Jazz Bistro

Claudio Jr De Rosa – sax, Dave Restivo – piano, Roberto Occhipinti – double bass, Amhed Mitchel – drums, and William Sperandei, will launch their latest album “496 Huron” at The Jazz Bistro on Tuesday, May 28.

The concert will feature a selection of works from “496 Huron”, a collection sponsored by the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Toronto produced as a result of Claudio’s Artist in Residency program. The CD offers original works by De Rosa and Occhipinti as well. Claudio Jr De Rosa, resident artist at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in 2018, is a saxophonist, bass clarinetist, arranger and composer and a rising musician in the European Jazz Scene. Graduated cum Laude with a Master Degree in Classical and Contemporary Saxophone at the Salerno and Rome Conservatories at age 21 (discussing a thesis regarding the Neurological implications During Improvisation), he eventually completed the Master in Jazz Saxophone at the Royal Conservatory in Den Haag. Since 2007, he performed in many important international venues in Italy, France, England, Belgium, the Netherlands, Taiwan, Spain, and Poland.

As an arranger, he wrote music for the NJSO, the New Talents Jazz Orchestra, the KonCon Big Band, the CvA Big Band, Call It Sextet, the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, CJDR Jazz Ensemble. In December 2015 the Dutch Ministry of Finance commissioned him “The Business Suite” for small Big Band. In March 2016 he won the prestigious “Louis van Dijck Jazz Award 2016” for arrangers.

In November 2015 he recorded his first album with Zadeno Trio, “Holes in the Ground” with “Emme Record Label, released in February 2016, followed by “The Step Forward” in May 2018.

In May 2017 his CD “Groovin’ Up!” is released and distributed by the Italian label Incipit and Egea Music, receiving great feedbacks from press and critique. Since 2017 the CJDR Jazz 4et performed in Festivals and venues like North Sea Jazz Festival, Lantaren Venster, Umbria Jazz (Artist Residence), Veneto Jazz, Getxo International Jazz and many others.

In November 2017 he was among the winners of the AIR project. Finally, in January 2018, his name is included in the list of the top 10 “Italian Emerging Artists”, a survey of experts run by Musica Jazz (the oldest Italian jazz magazine).

Since 2017 the CJDR Jazz 4et performed in Festivals and venues like North Sea Jazz Festival, Umbria Jazz (Artist Residence), Lantaren Venster, Veneto Jazz, Getxo International Jazz and many others.The next chapter of the CJDR 4et will be out in Spring 2019.

Roberto Occhipinti is one of Canada’s premier bassists, comfortable in a wide variety of musical contexts. He toured and recorded with Blue Note recording artist Jane Bunnett on her last 3 albums, including the Grammy nominated disc Alma de Santiago. In addition, Roberto toured with Juno award winning group NOJO, performing at Canadian jazz festivals with the legendary saxophonist Sam Rivers. Roberto has recorded 3 albums with Cuban piano virtuoso Hilario Durán including 2005 Juno award winning Album New Danzon which he produced and performed. Roberto continues this musical partnership with upcoming performances in the US and Canada.

As a classical musician, Roberto Occhipinti has been a member of the Winnipeg Symphony, Hamilton Philharmonic and Canadian Opera Company Orchestras. He has performed with virtually every classical music ensemble in Toronto and recent performances include the St. Lawrence Quartet, The Gryphon Trio and Via Salzburg.

In addition, with an interest in Contemporary Music, he was a member of the new music group Arraymusic, performed with New Music Concerts and was principal bass of the Esprit Orchestra.
