Ciao, Professoressa! Theatrical adaptation of Lina Wertmüller’s 1992 comedy, by UofT students

The University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) and the Maschere duemondi theatre troupe are excited to announce this year’s Italian performance: Ciao, Professoressa! an adaptation of Lina Wertmüller’s 1992 comedy, Ciao, Professore!, as performed by students of Italian Studies and directed by Teresa Lobalsamo (UTM faculty).

Brief Synopsis:

The play tells a classic “fish out of water” story of a teacher, Professoressa Sperelli, who is accidentally transferred from northern Italy to a school near Naples, in southern Italy.

At first, she struggles to accept the apparent differences between her and her students and experiences many trials and tribulations in her new teaching role.

As time goes on, she discovers that, despite her initial perceptions, she learns just as much from her students as they do from her.

The tradition of Italian theatre at UTM began over 30 years ago when Professors Salvatore Bancheri and Guido Pugliese directed plays as extracurricular activities until they embedded productions into courses, under the Maschere duemondi (Two-World Players) - a name indicative of the harmonization of two dualities: Canadian and Italian, University and community, entertainment and learning. There are three dimensions to the award-winning theatre courses: literary, linguistic, and performative. Plays are analyzed as a literary artifact and fuelled by the imagination, operates as a play that is fully actualized only when performed. Students generate communication their message exclusively through dialogue and the immersive techniques they use to play their characters help them to tell an unforgettable story.
