Movie
L’ Altra Italia begins its new 2018-19 season with an English language romantic comedy film directed by Donald Petrie and starring Emma Roberts and Hayden Christensen, a movie filmed entirely in Toronto’s Little Italy. With an all-star cast which includes Alyssa Milano, Danny Aiello, Andrea Martin and Jane Seymour, Little Italy “follows the script” when it comes to representing every Italo Canadian (or American) stereotype. This however is not without its charm, lending the film a particular appeal to Italian Canadians.
The story is primarily focused on Nikki (Emma Roberts), a young up-and-coming chef from London who returns home to Toronto to renew a work visa. Once back in her parents’ pizzeria — Sal’s Pizza — she meets her childhood crush, Leo (Hayden Christiansen), and, before you know it, she’s ready for romance! The only problem is that Nikki and Leo’s dads, once in business together, operate competing restaurants next to each other. The air is rife with petty jealousies, competition, and hate, so the amusing reference to Romeo and Juliet, simply reminds us that these two, were also Italian.
