Book presentation: “The Linguistic Space of Global Italian: The case of Ontario” curated by Professors Barbara Turchetta e Massimo Vedovelli

Professors Barbara Turchetta and Massimo Vedovelli will present the results of their latest research, which involved experts from four Universities, between Italy and Canada. The project was conceived by the need to acquire more accurate information on a multilingual reality in the Ontario Region as a result of the majority of concentration of Italian language in the world. It is an initiative that bears witness to the “Sistema Italia”, which took the form of an action promoted by the university and consular institutions, and includes the participation of associations, entrepreneurs and Italian training structures in Canada. The research focuses on families of Italian origin, young descendants, students of non-Italian origin, foreigners involved with Italian language and culture. Particular attention was given to the presence of Italian linguistics and symbolic urban landscapes.

Barbara Turchetta is a professor of Linguistics of multicultural societies at the University of IUL in Florence. She taught at the Suor Orsola Benincasa University Institute, at the University of Tuscia, at the University for Foreigners of Perugia. Among her main publications Field research in linguistics, Methods and survey techniques (2000), The world in Italian, Variety and international uses of language (2005), Language and diversity. Multilingualism and vehicular languages ​​in West Africa (2007),Italian in the world (2011), Ethnography of writing (2013).

Massimo Vedovelli is Professor of Educational Linguistics at the University for Foreigners of Siena, of which he was Rector from 2004 to 2013. He taught at the University of Calabria, Rome La Sapienza, Pavia. Among his publications L’italiano degli stranieri (2000), Guide to Italian for foreigners (2010), what is educational linguistics. Co-author of Italian 2000 and motivations and audiences of Italian in the world (2002).
