Global Art50 is a special initiative for the University of Toronto Mississauga’s 50th anniversary featuring internationally-renowned Italian film actress, Nicoletta Braschi. This multi-day celebration recognizes the vibrancy and importance of the Department of Language Studies at the University of Toronto Mississauga with a series of events.
NICOLETTA BRASCHI is an Italian actress and producer internationally best known for her work with her creative partner, director and actor Roberto Benigni. Both became household names in 1997 as a result of Benigni’s award-winning La vita è bella (Life is Beautiful), which also starred Dr. Braschi.
Born in Cesena, Italy, Dr. Braschi studied at Rome’s Academy of Dramatic Arts. A highly successful Italian actress and producer, Braschi boasts an extensive filmography. Her filmic debut (in 1983) would be alongside her husband, Roberto Benigni, in Tu Mi Turbi (You Upset Me, 1983). She later appeared in two Jim Jarmusch films, Down by Law (1986) and Mystery Train (1989).
Braschi has had several successful film collaborations with her husband, including Johnny Stecchino (1991), Il mostro (1994), and La vita è bella. For her role as Dora Orefice, in La vita è bella, she received a nomination for a Screen Actors Guild award.
Braschi has worked with a number of other esteemed directors such as Bernardo Bertolucci, Giuseppe Bertolucci, Marco Ferreri, Blake Edwards, Marco Tullio Giordana, and Francesca Comencini. In 1997, Braschi’s performance in Paolo Virzi’s Ovosodo earned her much praise from critics and audiences alike. A year later, she was awarded the David di Donatello Award for her role in this film. In 2002, she was a member of the jury at the Berlin Film Festival. In 2005, she starred in and produced La tigre e la neve (The Tiger and the Snow). In recent years, she has successfully taken to the stage Harold Pinter’s Betrayal and Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days.
The University of Toronto recognized Drs. Braschi and Benigni in 2015 with honorary degrees.
