Italy@EUFF | European Union Film Festival 2021

2021 11 27 euff logo 3

Due to the ongoing concerns caused by now a fading but by no means finished pandemic, the three festival presenters in Canada (in Ottawa, Vancouver, and Toronto), along with the Delegation of the European Union to Canada and the EU Member States, have decided to present another exciting virtual version of the EUFF in November 2021.

For the second and hopefully final time, in the long history of the EUFF, the Festival will be presented online, and like last year, making it available not only in Ottawa, Vancouver, and Toronto but all across Canada.

As in the 2020 edition, recorded interviews with filmmakers will be added to many of the screenings. While these European filmmakers are not able to be with us in person, they will be with us online to share their artistry and their approaches to filmmaking.

Our three film organizations are proud to work together again to bring you the best in contemporary cinema from the European Union in our second online EUFF. We wish you an eye-opening, thought-provoking, and entertaining European Union Film Festival.

NOTE:All films will be available for viewing for 48 hours from their scheduled start date. Please note that once you begin watching your film, you will have 24 hours to finish watching it.  ALL FILMS ARE GEOBLCKED TO CANADA.

ABOUT THE FILM

Set in 1900 in northeastern Italy, Laura Samani’s impressive debut feature film takes us on an odyssey of grief, faith, and determination revolving around a young woman who endures hazardous terrain and deeply restrictive gender codes to give a name to her recently stillborn child. While Agata was sleeping, her daughter was taken from her and buried in a nearby wood by superstitious locals. The village priest informs her that according to religious doctrine, stillborn children cannot be named or baptized and are destined to wander in limbo forever. There are rumours, however, of a distant church where such innocents are miraculously resurrected long enough to take a single breath — long enough to be admitted into heaven. Desperate, Agata exhumes her daughter, leaves her husband and her island home, and heads north, alone and without much guidance; that is, until she encounters Lynx, a street-smart thief who knows where Agata is headed. On the road together, they must contend with bandits and many other dangers to get to this mysterious destination.

“Inspired by reports of miracles performed at a Catholic sanctuary in Friuli Venezia Giulia, Samani has crafted a small-scale epic, following her single-minded heroine — still recovering from having given birth — across sea and mountains. This is independent filmmaking at its most bold, resourceful, and philosophically ambitious, bridging the gulf that separates the material and the spiritual.”
